STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton’s Office of Transition and Family Relations will host its annual Family Weekend featuring parent seminars, academic open houses, and Texan Alley tailgating prior to the Texans’ home opener this weekend.
Family Weekend is designed to demonstrate and showcase the wide range of academics and activities on campus, according to Lathes Towns, director of Transition and Family Relations.
“Family Weekend is a time to give parents the opportunity to see the incredible experience students are having here at Tarleton, and everything they’ve worked had for to send their child to Tarleton is really happening,” she said.
On Friday, campus guests will be welcomed at check-in, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Thompson Student Center, upper level. Guests will receive welcome packets and are invited to enjoy light refreshments upon their arrival to Tarleton.
Also planned for Friday is a financial aid and scholarships seminar in the Thompson Student Center, Ballroom A, allowing parents to learn more about reapplying for financial assistance for the spring 2014 term.
Campus tours will be offered at the university’s Welcome Center at 3:30 and 4 p.m., followed by a planetarium show at the Science Building at 6 p.m.
Friday evening will be capped off with a Family Hot Dog Social on the Recreation Sports Center lawn at 6 p.m. prior to Movie on the Lawn at 7:30. Students and parents are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket for the featured film, “42.”
Family Weekend continues on Saturday with check-in beginning at 8 a.m. on the Dining Hall Patio. Campus guests are invited to enjoy breakfast on the patio at 8:30 and remain for Texan Rally, a spirit-rousing event featuring Tarleton’s athletic teams, The Sound & The Fury marching band, cheerleaders and dance team, the Plowboys and the Purple Poo.
From 10 a.m. to noon, parents are invited to a seminar, which will provide divisional updates and a meeting of the Tarleton Parents Association in Room 119 of the O.A. Grant Building.
At noon, guests are invited to enjoy lunch on campus at the Texan Star Food Court or Dining Hall, or off-campus.
From 1-4 p.m., Residential Living & Learning will host an open house at the Tarleton Center and various RL&L offices located across campus in each residential hall. Also from 1-4 p.m., the Recreation Sports Center will welcome visitors to try their hand at the rock climbing wall and other activities.
The planetarium will present “The New Cosmos” at 1 p.m. and a second show, “Journey to the Edge of Space and Time” at 2 p.m., at the Science Building.
Tarleton President F. Dominic Dottavio and Dr. Lisette Dottavio will open their home, Trogdon House, to campus visitors at 1:30 p.m. and invite students and their families to enjoy lemonade and cookies.
A Kid’s Camp, hosted by the Kinesiology Fitness Club, will take place from 2-4 p.m. at the Recreation Sports Center, prior to Texan Alley, a Texas-sized tailgate event that kicks off at 4 p.m. in the east Memorial Stadium parking lot. Enjoy food and drink, live music by Mike Ryan, and visit with current students and alumni as they prepare to cheer on the Texans in the team’s first home game of the season.
In a battle of Lone Star Conference undefeated teams, the No. 21 Tarleton Texans will play host to No. 4 West Texas A&M. Kick off is set for 7 p.m. and all guests are invited to help support the purple and white. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students, and will be available for purchase at the gate prior to kick off beginning at 5:30 p.m.
Towns anticipates that between 1,000 and 2,000 family members will visit campus this weekend, but emphasized that parents are not the only ones welcome to participate in the festivities.
“It’s not just parents that come, but also grandparents, siblings and sometimes aunts and uncles,” she said. “It’s a great opportunity for extended family to witness Tarleton’s student-centered approach and experience the warm welcome our university offers to all visitors.”
