STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Texan News Service (TNS), a student-run news outlet, has selected Monét Gerald as its new editor in chief.

“Readers and viewers should look forward to new products and look forward to the products that we’ve been pushing getting better,” Gerald said. “We’ve got new shows on Texan TV News and new columns on the website. We’re working on the magazine (Cross Timbers Trails) and revamping the magazine’s website.

“I want TNS to be the go-to when you want to know what’s going on in our area,” she added. “I want us to continue to push buttons and make a more transparent university.”

Gerald started working for Texan News one year ago and held the associate producer position last semester. She has had stories published in the Stephenville Empire-Tribune and the Glen Rose Current, as well as Texan News. She is also a founding member and treasurer of the Tarleton Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).

Gerald is from Burlington Township, N.J., but moved to Keller, Texas, in 2009. She plans on graduating this December with a degree in communication studies with an emphasis in broadcast journalism. She hopes to become a producer for a sports show and do some writing on the side.

“I thought I always wanted to be a sports writer, but after Dan Malone’s broadcast class I learned I love being behind the camera,”

 she said.

Regarding her new position, she said, “In these first couple weeks alone, I’ve seen what a responsibility it is, and I’m flattered that my advisers thought of me as someone who could handle the task.”

Adviser Dan Malone said Gerald is a natural leader and a journalist who can inform readers through multiplatform storytelling. “Monét and her team are continuing the Texan News Service tradition of seeking truth and reporting it. We had a very strong summer with editor K’Leigh Bedingfield, and I expect a great fall semester of engaging news stories that need to be told and should be told,” he said.

Texan News Service, at www.texannews.net, is an online news website produced by students at Tarleton State University. The regional news service consists of news articles and features as well as daily news broadcasts.
