STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Free bicycle helmets will be given away on the Tarleton campus this Friday ahead of the annual Firecracker 100 bike race as part of an event sponsored by the Stephenville Kiwanis Club and state Rep. J.D. Sheffield.

“Hard Hats for Little Heads,” a statewide effort funded by the Texas Medical Association, will take place from 5-7 p.m. on July 5, near Wisdom Gymnasium where a pre-registration booth will be set up for the Firecracker 100 race, which will take place the following day.

Free bicycle helmets will be provided to children up to age 18 with representatives on hand to help ensure proper fitting and explain the importance of using the safety equipment. The helmet giveaway is also designed to benefit children who enjoy skateboarding, roller skating and razor scooters.

"We are looking forward to helping children remain safe as they enjoy summer outdoor activities," said Sheffield. "This is a great opportunity to promote safety, as head injuries are the most serious type of injury for bicyclists."

According to the Texas Medical Association, the Hard Hats for Little Heads giveaway program was created to help reduce head injury among Texas children. “A properly fitting helmet can prevent almost all head injuries—up to 85 percent—the most common cause of disability or death in a bicycle crash. Since 1994, TMA has given away more than 145,000 helmets to Texas children,” the association states on its website.
