STEPHENVILLE, Texas—More than 300 high school juniors and seniors are visiting Tarleton this week for the Texas Farm Bureau-sponsored Youth Leadership Conference. The conference, celebrating its golden anniversary, has been attended by more than 13,000 youths since 1963, and is being held at Tarleton for the second-straight year.

According to the Texas Farm Bureau, the purpose of the conference is to provide the students with a better understanding of their American heritage, the capitalistic free enterprise system, and to inspire leadership development, as well as to provide them with a better understanding of the various forms of government and their responsibility as citizens.

Among those welcoming the conference-goers to the university were Tarleton President F. Dominic Dottavio and Vernie Glasson III, executive director of Texas Farm Bureau. Also addressing the participants gathered for the 50th annual event was Henrietta, Texas, native Chance Cerda, Tarleton’s student body president who is an alumnus of the Youth Leadership Conference and served as a junior counselor while a high school student.

Three areas are emphasized at the conference: patriotism, responsibility and leadership. Students will discuss topics such as the free enterprise system, constitutional government, Americanism, leadership and goal setting.

“We are extremely proud to celebrate the golden anniversary of this important program, which aims to encourage and develop the future leaders of Texas,” said Kenneth Dierschke, farm bureau president. “By investing in our future leaders, we hope these students gain a greater appreciation for the cornerstones of our country—the U.S. Constitution and our free enterprise system. For 50 years, Texas Farm Bureau has seen incredible young people come through this program and go on to become active and productive citizens.”
