STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton welcomed public school educators from across the state this week for the 19th annual Summer Agricultural Institute, sponsored by the Texas Farm Bureau (TFB) and facilitated by the university’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.

The workshop, attended by elementary, middle and high school teachers, serves to provide continuing education credits to help satisfy the requirements of their local school districts and three hours of graduate credit from Tarleton. The Summer Ag Institute also strives to inform educators about the importance of food and fiber production, and show them how they can incorporate agricultural education into their classrooms.

“It is increasingly important to engage students with agricultural themes in the classroom. After attending the program, teacher participants are able to take hands-on techniques straight back to the classroom, “ said Tad Duncan, education coordinator for TFB. “Agriculturally themed lessons apply to every age and every subject.”

Among the seminars held this week at Tarleton’s Agriculture Center were activities related to soil science, entomology and horticulture. This week’s events also included field trips to Veldhuizen Cheese Shoppe, Tarleton’s Southwest Regional Dairy Center and Meats Laboratory, Texas AgriLife Research and Extension Center, a local tree nursery, and more.

Dr. Sandra Graham, professor in Tarleton’s agricultural and consumer sciences department, worked with TFB to bring the educators to the university. “They take an entire week out of their summer to improve their classrooms and give back to their students,” Graham said. “I really appreciate their dedication.”

TFB, in cooperation with Tarleton State University, has hosted the Summer Agricultural Institute since 1994. To date, more than 270 teachers have attended the institute and returned to their classroom with a greater knowledge and understanding of the importance and impact of agriculture.
