STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton student Anthony Joel Gonzales, 26, a U.S. Army veteran and sophomore kinesiology major from De Leon, Texas, died as a result of a motor vehicle accident at approximately 10:15 p.m. Wednesday on Hwy. 6 near Dublin.

“Again, the Tarleton family is facing the loss of one of our own,” said Tarleton President F. Dominic Dottavio. “Anthony had a bright future after serving in the U.S. Army. He enrolled at Tarleton where he was a kinesiology major and worked as a personal trainer at the Recreational Sports Center.

“The deaths of three students in less than a week remind us yet again of human frailty, the fragility of life and the imperative to understand our limited time in this world,” Dottavio added. “As we remember Anthony and others who have been taken from us too soon, let us vow to live a life of integrity, honor, laughter and, above all, love. To all of Anthony’s family and friends, know that the Tarleton family joins you in your grief. You are in our thoughts and prayers.”

Prior to enrolling at Tarleton, Anthony proudly served his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Army from 2007-2010. During his time in the military, he received many medals of honor for his bravery while deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, including the Iraq Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Professional Development Ribbon. He was also a member of the Tarleton Veterans Association, an on-campus chapter of Student Veterans of America.

Funeral services for Anthony will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 6, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, 6044 Hwy. 16 in De Leon. Family will receive friends during a visitation that will take place from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, at Nowlin Anders Funeral Home, located at 340 S. Austin St. in De Leon. Rosary will be held at 7 p.m.
