STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Homeowners wanting to learn the fundamentals of maintaining a beautiful lawn are invited to the 2nd annual Turfgrass Field Day at Tarleton’s Agriculture Center.

Sponsored by Tarleton and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, the Turfgrass Field Day will be held from 2-4 p.m. Friday, May 10, at the university’s Agriculture Center (College Farm) located on FM 8 east of Stephenville.

The free event will include sessions led by Dr. Hennen Cummings, associate professor and director of turfgrass management, and Dr. Whit Weems, Erath County extension agent for ag and natural resources.

Participants will learn about 12 different turfgrass species, as well as discover the answers to the four most popular turfgrass questions, including: What types of grass should I plant in my yard? What kind of fertilizer should I use? What can I spray to control weeds? And, how do I repair bare spots in my lawn? Visitors will also learn when and how to properly irrigate lawns, tips on mowing frequencies and settings, and dealing with varmints such as moles.

“Homeowners through professional lawn and commercial property managers are encouraged to attend and ask questions whether the property already looks great or needs improvement, has an irrigation system or not, or recently had a pest, disease, weed or insect problem,” said Cummings.

As part of the field day, the public will be offered the opportunity to dig a clump of field-grown lilies for $5.

Participants are asked to register for the event before noon on Thursday, May 9, by calling the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension – Erath County office at 254-965-1460 or email
