STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Four anglers representing two teams from the Tarleton Bass Club competed in the Carhartt® Bassmaster College Series’ Central Regional Tournament this past weekend at Lake Amistad near Del Rio, Texas, with one duo capturing second place in the competition and earning a bid to the national championship.

Tarleton’s Colt Farris and Hunter Randolph hauled in 10 trophy bass for a two-day total of 31 pounds to take second place behind New Mexico State University’s Tanner Cooper and Memo Nunez.

After the first day on the lake, Farris and Randolph turned in five bass totaling 17 pounds, 8 ounces and followed with an additional 13 pounds, 8 ounces on Day 2. The second place came with a $1,000 cash prize the anglers will use to defray travel and tournament expenses.

Also representing Tarleton’s Bass Club in the tournament were Austin Brown and Kehl Robbins, who finished in 24th place with nine fish weighing a total of 23 pounds, 2 ounces.

The Carhartt® Bassmaster College Series National Championship will be held on Chatuge Reservoir in Young Harris, Ga., Aug. 1-3, leading to a berth in the world championship of bass fishing.

“We were throwing an umbrella rig, a modification of the Alabama rig, using minnows and throwing it along the bluff walls and moving it as slow as possible,” explained Farris, a senior at Tarleton. “On day two the sun came out around 11:30 a.m. and that bite shut down so we had to throw a square bill, lures that I actually hand-painted and created, to catch our bigger fish.”

With this past weekend’s qualifying win, Farris and Randolph are focusing their attention on preparing for the college series national championship in August. “If we do well there, then we have a shot at qualifying for the Bassmaster Classic National Championship,” he said.
