STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Twelve fourth-graders at Stephenville ISD’s Hook Elementary School were selected as winners of the first-ever essay contest sponsored by Tarleton’s College of Liberal and Fine Arts in conjunction with the W. K. Gordon Center for the Industrial History of Texas.

Dr. T. Lindsay Baker, director of the center, and Kelli Styron, interim dean of the college, presented certificates to the essay contest winners during a school awards assembly held Friday, Feb. 22 at Hook Elementary. Winners also received gift cards after their essays were judged the best in each of the school’s fourth-grade classrooms.

Winners from the inaugural essay contest include: Victoria Wysong, Rivers Shaw, Kelvin Ong, Callie Wells, Conner Leu, Sophi Fowler, Claira Caskey, Luke Barry, Hannah Hale, Kiley Chaplin, Katie McIrvin and Brittney Moser.

Approximately 350 students from Hook Elementary visited the W. K. Gordon Center and museum, Jan. 15-18, and submitted essay contest entries titled: “My Visit to the Thurber Ghost Town.”

Essays were written in class and judged by a panel of museum and university staff.

The mission of the W. K. Gordon Center is to preserve, document and research the industrial history of Thurber and the state of Texas, and to interpret its influence on the people of Texas. The focus of the permanent exhibits in the Center is the development of the coal, brick and petroleum industries in the Thurber vicinity. A special collections library and research area permits serious examination of life in Thurber and in other areas of industrial development in Texas and the Southwest.
