Movie executive to speak about Academy Awards

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Michael Barker, co-founder and co-president of Sony Pictures Classics, will speak on “Why the Oscars Still Matter” at 12:15 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 26, in Math 109. The presentation, sponsored by the Department of Communication Studies, is free and open to the public.

Sony Pictures Classics distributes, produces and acquires independent films from the United States and around the world.

Sony Pictures Classic films have won 25 Oscars and received well over 100 nominations since its founding in 1991. Its Best Picture nominations include Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Howard’s End, Capote, An Education, Midnight in Paris and this year’s Amour, which won the Palme d’Or in Cannes.

Amour won the 2013 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film and another Sony Pictures Classic release, Searching for Sugar Man, won Best Documentary.
