STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Members of the Division of Student Life staff rolled up their sleeves and led by example earlier this week by volunteering with the local mobile soup kitchen, Come Eat, Inc.
Full-time staff members from 12 different departments spent Tuesday and Thursday stuffing envelopes, prepping meals, assembling food boxes, loading the mobile food truck and handing out meals to Stephenville residents in need.
“As a division, we embrace Tarleton’s core values and feel it’s important to put them into practice,” said Rusty Jergins, Vice President for Student Life. “With this type of service project, we have a chance to demonstrate leadership and service on behalf of the university.”
The division’s employees who volunteered were given time away from their normal duties as part of the division’s professional development series.
“I strongly believe in giving back to your community,” said Deborah Bales, Program Coordinator for Recreational Sports. “I have been so blessed in my own life and it is great to have been provided an opportunity through the Student Life division to volunteer my time in doing something that will be a small blessing to someone else.”
The Come Eat, Inc. Mobile Soup Kitchen made its first meal delivery in June 2010 and soon after was serving more than 1,000 meals per month.
According to a study released by the Tarrant Area Food Bank and Feeding America, about one in six Erath County residents are living without enough food. Approximately one in four local children are at risk of going hungry.
Come Eat, Inc., currently conducts a regular service route to distribute meals twice a week. The local non-profit organization has also recently begun its Mobile Meals for Kids Program to ensure local children do not go hungry during the holiday and summer months when they are typically out of school.
