STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton’s Michael Young will serve a one-year term as director-at-large of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH).

Young is a simulation technology specialist in the university’s Center for Instructional Innovation (CII) and primarily serves the College of Science and Technology’s Department of Nursing. He also currently serves as vice chair of the SSH Technology Specialist Special Interest Group and is a member of the society’s accreditation committee. Young’s term on the SSH board of directors is effective Jan. 1, 2013.

Young is the first technician to serve on the board of SSH. He has been with the CII for more than six years.

“This is a significant appointment for Mr. Young, for the Center for Instructional Innovation and for Tarleton,” said Nick Lilly, manager of classroom and lab support services for the CII. “Through Michael’s efforts, in collaboration with the Department of Nursing, Dr. Elaine Evans, Morgan Scherwitz, Dr. James Pierce, and the CII, simulation has become a central component of the clinical training for all Tarleton nursing students while the university forges relationships with hospitals all over Central Texas.”

Young’s work with both the SSH accreditation council and certification committee has resulted in the development of standards for simulation programs seeking accreditation as well as the development of a new professional certification for clinical educators who utilize simulation as part of the education process.

SSH is the world’s largest nonprofit organization that addresses simulation in healthcare as a platform for research, training, education and instruction, and assessment for the medical/healthcare community worldwide.
