STEPHENVILLE, Texas—The introduction of social media has undoubtedly changed the way people and organizations communicate with each other, and the number of social media outlets is growing rapidly.

Although tough to keep up with continually changing trends, Career Services at Tarleton State University manages to effectively communicate with students and other career centers through the strategic use of social media. So much so that others are taking notice.

Katrina Phillips, program specialist at Career Services, has been asked to facilitate a round-table discussion at the Southern Association of Colleges and Employers conference, Dec. 2-5, in St. Pete Beach, Fla. During her session, Phillips will primarily focus on Pinterest and how it can be used by career centers to connect with students.

“Pinterest has emerged as an up-and-coming leader in the social media world, and it’s time that career service centers get in on the action,” Phillips said.

Phillips said her discussion will focus around four main questions: what is Pinterest and how does it work; what types of boards can career centers create; how can career centers promote their Pinterest accounts; and what are other new social media outlets that career centers should take advantage of?

Career Services at Tarleton currently uses their Pinterest page to “pin” various advice to help students be successful in searching for and finding a job. Topics include interviewing tips, dressing for success, social networking and resume advice. Career Services’ page can be found at

“I am confident that Pinterest is an effective tool for reaching out to our visual students and providing resources to aid in their career development,” Phillips said. “I can’t wait to share this idea with other career centers who have the same goal in mind.”

Phillips is a 2008 graduate of Tarleton State University and has been working for Career Services for two years. As part of her role as Program Specialist, she also serves as the marketing coordinator for the department.
