Tarleton groups to sponsor Free Speech Week

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—The Tarleton State University Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) chapter and the Department of Communication Studies will present a celebration of Free Speech Week Oct. 22-28 with speakers addressing free speech issues.

The sponsors will hand out Free Speech buttons from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 22-25 outside the library.

On Tuesday, Oct. 23, 
 Dr. Charles Howard, head of communication studies, will speak on “Civility, Technology and the Future of Free Speech,” 12:10-12:50 p.m. in the O.A. Grant Building, room 116.

Award-winning journalist Kathryn Jones will present “Don’t Shoot the Messenger: Free Speech and Bad News,” on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 12:10-12:50 p.m. in O.A. Grant 116.

And on Thursday, Oct. 25, Pete Slover, an attorney, former newspaper reporter, and a member of the Advisory Council of the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas, will speak on “Free Speech: It’s More than Talk—the First Amendment bundle of rights is not just for journalists.” Slover’s talk will also be held from 12:10-12:50 p.m. in O.A. Grant 116.

The presentations are free and open to students, faculty, staff and the general public.
