STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton State University is launching a new, single-semester student leadership program this fall targeted to first-year students. The program is called Tarleton Emerge and, as its name indicates, the focus will be to aid in developing and fostering leadership skills in emerging student leaders on campus.

“As a new leader at Tarleton it is important to build a foundation of leadership,” said Anthony Linder, a senior management major and Tarleton Emerge facilitator. “This program will help new students do just that.”

Participants will be divided into small, interactive groups that will be led by graduates of the Tarleton L.E.A.D.S. (Leadership, Engagement, Action, Development, Service) program. During an eight-week curriculum, participants will learn and have various conversations about the five exemplary practices of leadership and how to use those practices to become a successful leader.

Those five practices are: Model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart.

“I’ve learned so much through my involvement with Student Leadership Programs,” said Chelsea Braune, a senior agriculture communications major and Tarleton Emerge facilitator. “I’m looking forward to mentoring new leaders at Tarleton and passing along what I have learned.”

First-year students or those interested in beginning their leadership journey at Tarleton who are interested in participating in the Tarleton Emerge program are encouraged to attend one of two Emerge kick-off parties. A “Fiesta Party” will be held Tuesday, Sept. 25, from 4:30-6 p.m. and a “Luau Party” will be Wednesday, Sept. 26, from 6:30-8 p.m. Both parties will take place in Room 27 of the Barry B. Thompson Student Center.

Along with Linder and Braune, 10 other L.E.A.D.S. certified students will serve as facilitators of the Tarleton Emerge program, including: Kelsey Hutchens, Drew Isom, Juliann Jaime, Adam Joiner, Sami Landers, Kate Lindsey, Jacob McCay, Hannah Miller, Melanie Morales and Laura Scott.
