STEPHENVILLE, Texas—The first-ever Texan Transition Week, designed to help new students navigate the transition into the academic and campus life at Tarleton, will be held Aug. 18-26.

All incoming freshmen, commuters as well as residential students, and transfers—an estimated 1,700 students—will attend.

“Transition Week is about cultivating a sense of understanding of how to be successful during your college experience,” said Lathes Towns, director of transition and family relations programs. “We have created an environment for students to make that transition by being exposed to resources, faculty, staff, administrators and student leaders to gain an understanding of university support, while at the same time enjoying the social aspect of traditional college life.”

All sessions during the week will be centered on Tarleton’s core values—integrity, leadership, tradition, civility, excellence and service.

Academic-type sessions will include tools for successful learning, useful study habits, university expectations, supplemental instruction opportunities, how to navigate the Dick Smith Library, tips for first-generation students and more. Students will also get to meet the faculty in their respective colleges.

Social events are designed to familiarize students with Tarleton traditions and landmarks as well as create a sense of campus community. They include ropes, all-class rallies, a visit to Splashville, movie on the lawn, street dance, game night and others. A volunteer fair will help new students learn about service opportunities at Tarleton and in the community.

The highlight of the week will be the convocation and candle-lighting ceremony Aug. 26, during which the new students are officially welcomed to the Tarleton family and college life.
