Office of University News & Information
Randy McCauley, Public Relations & Marketing Manager
254-519-5491

MAY 27, 2009

TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY SYSTEM
OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS
NEWS RELEASE

A&M SYSTEM EXPANDS TO 11 INDEPENDENT UNIVERSITIES WITH ADDITION OF CAMPUSES IN KILLEEN AND SAN ANTONIO

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Gov. Rick Perry today welcomed two new independent universities to The Texas A&M University System with a ceremony at the Capitol to sign a bill making the expansion possible. Texas A&M University-Central Texas and Texas A&M University-San Antonio each have passed enrollment benchmarks set by the Texas Legislature to qualify for stand-alone status. The former system centers had been part of Tarleton State University and Texas A&M University-Kingsville, respectively.

The addition of A&M-Central Texas and A&M-San Antonio increases the number of independent universities in the A&M System to 11. The system, which has offices in 250 of the state’s 254 counties, also includes seven state agencies and a comprehensive health science center. It operates a $3.04 billion budget and educates more than 109,000 students.

“We are very proud of all the work that has gone into making independent A&M System universities in Killeen and San Antonio a reality. These universities will not only bring jobs to Killeen and San Antonio, but also provide local residents easy access to a quality, affordable university education,” said Morris Foster, chairman of the Board of Regents.

“Texas is a state on the upswing. As our population continues to grow and we work to remain competitive in the global marketplace, we need to make sure we have the higher education opportunities in place to groom the workforce of the next 50 years,” said Gov. Perry. “This bill acknowledges the rapid growth of our student population and accelerates these schools’ ability to issue tuition revenue bonds and build the facilities they need.”

In May, the Texas Legislature passed a bill to lower the full-time enrollment threshold from 1,500 to 1,000 and free up $40 million in tuition revenue bonds to build the A&M-San Antonio campus. It will be located on 700 acres south of Loop 410 between Pleasanton Road and South Zarzamora Street.

In March, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board certified Tarleton State University-Central Texas’ spring 2009 enrollment at 1,204 full-time students, surpassing the 1,000 mark set by the legislature. Texas A&M System Chancellor Michael D. McKinney and Army Secretary Pete Geren signed an agreement in May to transfer 662 acres from Fort Hood to the A&M System to be used for the A&M-Central Texas campus.

“The expansion of the A&M System is already having a profound impact on the economy, academic excellence and access to higher education for all Texans,” said McKinney.

Texas A&M University - Central Texas, offers evening, weekend and online classes toward bachelor’s and master’s degrees and is located just off of Highway 190 at 1901 S. Clear Creek Road in Killeen. For more information, call 254-519-5421 or log on to www.TAMUCT.org.

###
