STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton State University’s Department of Student Publications was recognized on a state level last week for outstanding work by JTAC News and the Grassburr.

Tarleton joined 56 other universities and colleges at the annual Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) Convention in San Antonio where the two student-run publications walked away with a total of 34 awards.

“Each and every day I am amazed at the talent our students possess,” said Caleb Chapman, director of Student Publications. “The students in our department are some of the hardest working on campus and this recognition is very much deserved.”

The Grassburr, Tarleton’s yearbook, was given 16 awards for the 2013 publication, including nods for photography, cover design, writing and presentation. Top honors included first place for an academic package featuring Fine Arts and first place for Student Life copy highlighting Duck Camp.

The Grassburr also received Honorable Mention for Overall Excellence.

JTAC News was recognized with 18 awards for design, news coverage, column writing, photography and online presence. Top honors included first place for Best Online Interactivity, first and second places for Information Graphics and first place for General Column writing.

JTAC News also received Honorable Mention for Overall Excellence and ranked fourth for the coveted Sweepstakes award.

Student Publications has also been expanding its video presence over the last two years. The department was recognized at the TIPA Convention with a third place award for Best Video Package. The winning video was produced during last fall’s Transition Week.

The Department of Student Publications is a part of the Division of Student Life. The Grassburr was first published in 1916 and JTAC News was first published in 1919. The staffs of both publications are comprised solely of Tarleton students.
