STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton’s Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble I invite the community to preview their New York and Carnegie Hall concerts on Tuesday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center auditorium.

The ensembles depart next weekend for a five-day excursion to participate in the 8th annual New York International Music Festival, which will include an outdoor performance at Central Park’s Naumberg Band Shell and an evening performance by the Tarleton Wind Ensemble inside Carnegie Hall’s Isaac Stern Auditorium.

Tuesday’s preview concert is open to the public. Tickets are $5 or free with a Tarleton ID.

The Wind Ensemble will showcase Leonard Bernstein’s Overture to Candide, Gustav Mahler’s Urlicht (with Dr. Heather Hawk as soloist), the premier of a concert march titled, Tarleton Forever, and Jacque Press’ Wedding Dance. The Wind Ensemble will also showcase David Gillingham’s Concertino for Four Percussion and Wind Ensemble featuring Tahlequah Kirk (Granbury High), Larry Lawless (Stephenville High, ret.) and Tarleton alumni Michael Crawford and Stephen Seymour.

Finally, the ensemble will provide a sneak peek at a commission that will receive its world premier in Carnegie Hall by film composer, Charles Fernandez, titled Spirits Rising: The Texan Rider.

Tarleton’s Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Greg Ball, will be playing a great bluesy number Bass Face, Black Orpheus which has an infectious Latin groove, and the Woody Herman classic Four Brothers which will feature the saxophone section.

“We hope to see you there as we get ready to take over the Big Apple,” said director of bands Dr. Anthony Pursell. “The students have worked very hard over the past two months to prepare for this once-in-lifetime opportunity to perform inside Carnegie Hall.”
