STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Want to learn about severe storms, how you can report severe and hazardous weather to the Fort Worth National Weather Service Office, or want to become a storm spotter?

The National Weather Service (NWS), in cooperation with Tarleton, is inviting area residents to take part in a basic SKYWARN Spotter Training Class on Thursday, March 27, from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

The free class will be held in Tarleton’s Science Building, Room 102. Training will be presented by meteorologists with the Fort Worth NWS Office and no pre-registration is required.

SKYWARN consists of trained weather spotters who report severe or hazardous weather. It is widely regarded as one of the most critical assets to the NWS’ warning, forecasting and verification process. Since the program started in the 1970s, information provided by SKYWARN spotters, coupled with Doppler radar technology, improved satellite and other data, has enabled NWS to issue more timely and accurate warnings for tornadoes, severe thunderstorms and flash floods.

The course aims to familiarize residents with numerous public safety and communications practices that can be utilized during extreme weather events. The class also covers the basics of thunderstorm development, fundamentals of storm structure, identifying potential severe weather features, information to report and how to report it, as well as basic severe weather safety.
