FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, November 6, 2013

STEPHENVILLE, Texas—Tarleton’s Military Veterans Services Center is establishing the Chris Kyle Veterans Support Fund for the benefit of student veterans.

Kyle, a former Tarleton student, was a Navy SEAL and celebrated sniper who devoted himself to veterans’ causes after he was discharged. He was slain in February 2013.

Dr. James Vardalis, head of the veterans services center, announced the fund at a Nov. 6 meeting of the Military Veterans Services Center Advisory Board. The account will be funded through private donations and gifts. The Tarleton Area Educational Office Professionals gave $1,000 to jump-start the fund.

Vardalis said the fund would be used for personal items, computers or calculators, for example, that may be needed by student veterans. A screening process will be established to recommend disbursements to Vardalis, who will have discretionary authority over the fund.

Vardalis also announced that Chris Kyle’s parents, Wayne and Debi Kyle, are new members of the Military Veterans Services Center Advisory Board.

Established in November 2011, the center works closely with U.S. military veteran students and dependents to help them achieve their educational goals at Tarleton. There are 420 student veterans attending Tarleton. The veteran services center also provides assistance to spouses and dependents of veterans.
