STEPHENVILLE, Texas—The Tarleton State Athletic Training staff has earned the annual Lone Star Conference Athletic Training Staff of the Year award for the first time in school history.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized by the Lone Star Conference and our peers throughout the conference,” said Dr. Steve Simpson, head of the Tarleton Athletic Training program. “There is a high standard of health care provided for the student-athletes in the LSC and we strive to continue this care. This award was made possible through the efforts of our great staff, graduate assistants and athletic training students.”

In his 29th year at Tarleton, Simpson heads the Tarleton State Athletic Training department with his staff of colleagues and former students—Jacob Fain, Pedro Rodriguez and Rachel Howell—as well as graduate assistants Shelby Douglass, Annie Nalepa, Sherissa Hua and Jose Salas.

This marks the ninth LSC Athletic Training Staff of the Year award given out by the conference since the inaugural award in the 2004-05 season and the first award to honor the Tarleton training staff.

“Dr. Simpson has done a tremendous job over his nearly 30-year career here with Tarleton,” said Athletic Director Lonn Reisman. “He is always looking to improve his program. He doesn’t believe in being complacent and is constantly looking to improve the Sports Medicine department at Tarleton State.

“This award exemplifies the commitment this staff has in ensuring our student-athletes, as well as visiting student-athletes, are taken care of in a professional manner,” continued Reisman. “Our staff is filled with tireless workers and they are absolutely worthy of this honor. I couldn’t be more proud of the work they do year after year for Tarleton State University.”

The award was designed to raise awareness of the athletic training profession. The criteria for the honor is based on the staff’s hospitality toward visiting athletic trainers and teams; preparedness with supplies, equipment and services for visiting athletic trainers and teams; preparedness for emergency situations; and care for injured athletes from visiting teams.

The LSC Athletic Training Staff of the Year award is present to the top institution as voted on by the head athletic trainers around the Lone Star Conference.
