Board of Regents Meeting Update
Greetings to all.
After each meeting of The Texas A&M System Board of Regents, I try to provide a recap of events concerning Tarleton. This is a summary of their December 2, 2010, meeting during which the Regents considered and approved Tarleton’s request to build new student housing and confirmed the appointment and commissioning of Letithas Fountain as our newest police officer.
The University’s request to build a New Student Housing Phase II project, was necessary in order to support the growing residential student population on campus. In addition to the 19% growth in our freshman class for fall 2010, enrollment trend data indicates continued growth over the next few years.
The new residence hall will be nearly identical in size (300+beds) and style to the recently completed Legends Hall. It will be located on a site adjacent to and just east of Legends. To replace parking lost through construction and to help ease the parking demand on the north side of campus, additional parking on the east side of Lillian Street will be provided. To increase overall parking on the campus we are also attempting to acquire several land parcels within the 2020 Master Plan boundary.
Subject to approval of the project by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, construction on the residence hall is currently scheduled to begin in December 2010 and be ready for occupancy in August 2011. The total budget is $13,000,000, which will be paid from revenue generated by students living in the facility.
I am very pleased to now officially welcome Officer Fountain to the Tarleton family.
F. Dominic Dottavio, Ph.D.
