Saddle up for a wild ride at the W.K. Gordon Center on October 20, 2013 at 2:00 pm for this Sunday Afternoon Program, "Tales from the Trails", featuring Texas Forts Trail Region Executive Director, Margaret Hoogstra. Come hear Texas history lessons you may not have heard before from unconventional healing methods, historic graffiti to being caught in a buffalo stampede!
Not so long ago, the Forts Trail Region was the wild frontier where explorers and frontiersmen clashed with the land and Native Americans. As settlers pushed west with their dreams of new beginnings and opportunity, lines of forts were established to protect these settlers. The frontier pushed forward, receded as America fought its Civil War and then gave a mighty push westward. The stories of these Native Americans, explorers, soldiers, settlers and entrepreneurs are intertwined with those who live within the region today. Come hear some of these stories and gain a deeper appreciation for our heritage!
The Texas Forts Trail Region was established in 1968 as part of a statewide tourism initiative and then re-instituted in 1998. Comprised of twenty-nine counties in Central West Texas, the Forts Trail Region is home to eight frontier forts and a Spanish presidio. Margaret Hoogstra serves as the executive director of the Texas Forts Trail. She works with a variety of organizations to increase tourism, foster historic preservation and develop regional leadership. A graduate of Hardin-Simmons University, Margaret’s professional experience includes marketing, public relations, event planning and fund raising. She and her husband Bill reside in rural Callahan County.
