The Friends of the Dick Smith Library at Tarleton State University in Stephenville will present the next iteration of the semiannual Dinner in the Stacks on Saturday, April 5th. The speaker for the dinner is Daniel L. Smith, author of the new book The Bankhead Highway in Texas: Texas Highway No. 1, which is the subject of his talk. Copies of the book, inscribed by the author, will be available after the presentation.
The Bankhead Highway was the first all-weather transcontinental highway in America, running from Washington, D.C, in the east to San Diego, California in the west. About a third of its length lay in Texas between Texarkana and El Paso. Much of the old highway is still visible and still passable. Designated as Texas Highway 1 by the nascent Texas Highway Department, much of the route from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex west through Weatherford, Millsap, and Mineral Wells was later used by the new U.S. Highway 80.
The dinner, catered by the campus food service, will be served on the second floor of the library on the Tarleton campus at 7:00 PM, with reception and hors d’oeuvres at 6:30 PM. Reservations should be made no later than 5:00 PM on Wednesday, April 2.
