News alert:

President Obama declares H1N1 flu a national emergency

Healthy reminders:

Wash hands — Practice good hand hygiene by washing your hands with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners also are effective, especially before and after using a keyboard in common computing areas.

Cover your mouth — Practice good respiratory etiquette by covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow or shoulder, not into your hands.

Avoid spreading germs — Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as germs are spread this way. Clean high-touch surfaces and commonly used surfaces after coughing or sneezing.

Flu at Tarleton

State and national health officials have advised Tarleton State University students, faculty and staff to prepare for the 2009 novel H1N1 flu virus, as well as the season flu virus. According to the CDC, the H1N1 virus will not be more severe than seasonal flu.

Several cases of influenza-like illnesses (ILI) have been documented on the Tarleton campus. However, distinguishing between H1N1 and the seasonal flu is difficult as they both have the same symptoms. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) is not recommending laboratory testing to determine or confirm H1N1 unless hospitalization or extreme symptoms occur.

Hazmat flu spot

Earlier this year, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced a video PSA contest on flu prevention. This video was to inform people about the flu and motivate them to take steps that help prevent the spread of the flu. The video above is one of the Runner Ups. Check out more at Flu.gov.
