William Sakamoto White
Ph.D., Georgia State University, 1996

Assistant Professor of Sociology
Dr. White is a critical urban and race sociologist. He earned a B.A. in Political Science from the University of California, Davis, and earned at Georgia State University his M.S. in Urban Studies and his Ph.D. in Sociology. His research focuses on oppressive and contradictory relations in the United States specifically in the areas of affordable housing, economic development, and education. His comparative studies have taken him to Havana, Cuba where he studies the influence of tourism on the everyday life of Havana residents. He is a “bona-fide, FEMA Certified” Hurricane Katrina Evacuee (don’t call him a “refugee”—he doesn’t like it). His current research focuses on the relationship between Place and Identity and how this relationship influences whether Katrina evacuees decide to move back to New Orleans to rebuild or choose to rebuild their lives in other places. A former DJ with WWOZ-FM New Orleans, Dr. White continues to spend his leisure time as a disc jockey on Live365.com (www.live365.com/stations/banzaibill_wwoz).
