What will the M.Ed. and principal certification qualify me to do?
The earned master's degree and principal certification provides and individual with the credentials to hold campus-level administrative positions and district-determined central office-level positions within Texas.
Do you have any alternative certification programs?
The New Century Educational Leadership Program (NCELP) is a state-approved alternative principal certification program. NCELP is a degree/certification program where students spend a portion of the days engaged in internship activities with a partner school district. The program requires 39 semester hours of coursework.
Do you offer online programs?
No, the programs in the Departments of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies primarily employ a face-to-face delivery system. The face-to-face delivery system is supplemented with selected online courses and WebCT enhancements.
Where do you teach your classes?
Classes in the M.Ed., principal certification, and superintendent certification programs are taught in Stephenville, Fort Worth, and Waco. Stephenville classes are taught on the Tarleton State University campus and at various local sites. Classes in Fort Worth are taught at the Hickman Building (6777 Camp Bowie Boulevard), and at the Terrell College of Clinical Laboratory Sciences (1501 Enderly Place). NCELP cohort groups meet in either Fort Worth or Waco.
When do you teach your classes?
During the fall and spring semesters, M.Ed., principal certification, and superintendent certification classes are typically held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday evenings, or all day on a designated number of Saturdays. Doctoral classes meet on Wednesday evenings or Saturdays. During the summer sessions, M.Ed., principal certification, and superintendent certification classes continue to meet in the evening with a limited number of day classes in Stephenville. Doctoral classes meet all day on designated Fridays and Saturdays. NCELP classes meeting in a daily format during the summer and in a weekend format during the fall and spring semesters.
How do I apply for administration to a program?
All admission to programs in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies starts with admission to the College of Graduate Studies. Information at the admission process may be found at the College of Graduate Studies website. Students may apply for admission to the M.Ed., principal certification, and superintendent certification programs at any time. NCELP cohorts begin coursework in June each year and prospective students should check with the Director of the program or NCELP website for admissions deadlines. Individuals interested in the Ed.D. program should be aware of the November 1 early admissions deadline and the April 1 admissions deadlines. Doctor cohorts begin class work in July of each year.
What is the minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) requirement?
A minimum grade point average (based on a 4-point scale) of 3.0 on the last 60 hours of credit completed is required by the college of Graduate Studies.
What is the minimum required Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score?
There is no minimum required score. GRE scores are not required for admission to the post-master's principal certification program or the superintendent certification program.
Can the GRE be waived?
No. GRE scores are required for admission to the M.Ed. (traditional program and NCELP) and Ed.D. programs.
Does Tarleton State University accept old GRE scores?
GRE scores must be less than 5 year old when they are submitted.
My GRE scores are not so good. May I still apply?
I am taking the GRE in a few weeks before/after the application deadline. Will my application still be considered?
For the M.Ed. programs, the College of Graduate Studies may permit conditional admission which allows students to complete the GRE requirement within one semester and limits enrollment to no more than two (2) graduate courses). For the Ed.D. program, students must submit the GRE score by the application deadline of November 1 or April or the application will be considered incomplete and not be reviewed. There are no conditional or probationary admissions to the doctoral program.
I sent most of my application materials in before the deadline, but I know a few items such as letters of reference are still missing, Will my application still be considered?
Admission to the College of Graduate Studies is determined by the Dean of the College. Questions about missing application materials (application, application fee, official transcripts, GRE score, and essay) should be directed to the College of Graduate Studies (254.968.9104 or College of Graduate Studies website). Students are not permitted to enroll in courses until they have been admitted by the College of Graduate Studies. Program admission materials (letters of reference, service records, and certificates) may be submitted prior to, during or after enrollment in EDAD 500 Foundations in Educational Administration. Students will not be recommended for certification if the student’s file is incomplete or missing materials.
It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that all required materials be received by the College of Graduate Studies and the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies by the established deadlines. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
Are admission interviews required?
Admission interviews are required for NCELP and for the doctoral program.
How do I know when I have been admitted?
Admission decisions are made by the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies. M.Ed. and on-degree seeking students are notified of their admission status by the Dean. Doctoral (Ed.D.) students are recommended to the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies by the Doctoral Admissions Committee through the Coordinator of the Doctoral Program. The Dean notifies prospective doctoral students of their admission status.
May I apply as a non-degree seeker?
Individuals may apply for the postmaster's principal certification program and the post-master's superintendent certification program as non-degree graduate students. For the post-master's principal certification program, the individual must hold a master's degree and teacher certification. For the post-master's superintendent certification program, the individual must hold a master's degree and principal certification.
I have a bachelor's degree. Can I apply directly to the doctoral program?
No. An individual must have earned a master's degree before applying to the doctoral program.
I do not have a teacher certification. May I still apply to the principalship program?
No. This program requires teacher certification.
My master's degree is not in education. May I still apply to the post-master's principal certification program?
Yes. If an individual has a master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education and teacher certification, he/she may apply to the post-master’s principal certification program.
My masters' degree is not in education. May I still apply to the doctoral program?
Yes, if the master's degree is from an accredited institution of higher education.
What is a cohort?
In the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, a cohort is a group of graduate students who enter the program and take a sequence of courses together that leads to a degree.
NCELP and the doctoral program are cohort-based programs.
What are the tuition and fee costs?

What examinations are required for the offered degrees and certification programs?
Students in the traditional M.Ed. program take a departmentally-administered master’s comprehensive examination at the end of the program coursework to complete the degree. Students in the NCELP program use a thesis option and produce an action research project to complete the program. All students must pass the Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) tests for principal and/or superintendent certification. Doctoral students must pass written and oral qualifying examinations to be advanced to candidacy status in the doctoral program.
Can I secure probationary principal or superintendent certification?
Probationary certification requires that an individual produce verification of employment by a school district, be admitted to the appropriate preparation program, be engaged in preparation coursework, and be engaged in internship coursework. The Department of Educational Administration and Policy Studies requires that a graduate student successfully complete a minimum of 12 hours of Tarleton State University EDAD program coursework before being eligible for recommendation for the probationary principal certification. The probationary principal certification (for principal or assistant principal positions) and the probationary superintendent certification are valid for one year. Probationary certificates may be renewed twice upon evidence of adequate progress toward full certification.
What course(s) must I take initially to begin the M,Ed. degree and/or principal certification programs?
It is highly recommended that newly-admitted EDAD program graduate students begin coursework by enrolling in the EDAD 500 Foundations Educational Administration course that is offered each semester and summer session throughout the academic year. Additionally, it is also recommended that newly-admitted students consult with a faculty advisor prior to initiating enrollment to identify which course should be taken initially.
I have been admitted by the College of Graduate Studies, but I cannot enroll because of a block. What do I need to do?
Each newly-admitted EDAD student has an advising block. Contact the department office (254-968-1947) for reference to an advisor and removal of the block at the advisor's request.
