•  shows if periodicals are available in the libraries' collections,
•  links to online, full text periodicals to which the libraries subscribe, and
•  links to full text periodicals in databases to which the libraries subscribe.

HOW TO BEGIN "TRACKING DOWN" ARTICLES
The example citation used to illustrate how to locate articles with the library catalog and citation information is
  Green, Thad B. "An Empirical Analysis of Nominal and Interacting Groups." Academy of Management Journal, 18:1, March 1975: 63-74.


1. Use the "periodical title" search option in the online library catalog to see if Tarleton libraries own issues of the periodical.
-- Click "Search the Catalog" on the library home page.
-- Choose periodical title from the search menu options.

Click "Catalog Keyword."

-- Type 'academy of management journal' in the search box.

Click "Search."

2. Look at the "Search Results" list.
-- Three records were found for periodicals with "academy of management journal" in their titles. image of catalog search results
-- Look for a title that exactly matches the search terms.

-- Click "Details" to see the periodical's item record.

3. Look at the periodical's item information record.
The item information record for a periodical offers a wealth of information as indicated in this image.




Explanations of the labeled portions of the image are given below

"Links to the periodical in the libraries' databases"

•  indicates that the periodical is available in Tarleton libraries' databases,
-- The links can be used to search for the periodical in the libraries' databases. However, information available in the catalog record (explained below in step 4) may be more useful and should be read first.

"Notations showing Tarleton libraries' holdings & the collection(s) in which the periodical is stored"

•  shows which Tarleton libraries have the periodical,
-- Dick Smith Library and the Tarleton library in Killeen have the periodical.
•  gives the extent of holdings (years and issues), and
-- Dick Smith Library has 1970 to 2000 of the periodical with missing issues.
-- Tarleton's library in Killeen has 1990 to 2004 of the periodical.
•  tells where the periodical is stored.
-- Dick Smith Library stores 1970-1981 issues offsite & 1982-2000 issues on microfiche.
-- Tarleton's library in Killeen stores 1990-2002 issues on microfiche and 2003-2004 issues in the Periodicals Collection.

4. Look at the periodical's catalog record.
The catalog record for a periodical offers useful information:
ISSN, publication information, subject terms, etc.


This information about online access to the periodical is especially useful as explained below.

•  shows information about Tarleton libraries' databases that have online articles from the periodical and
-- Tells which database(s) offers the periodical & dates of coverage.
•  gives direct access to the periodical in the listed database(s).
-- Click the link to search for the periodical in the database.

HOW TO CONTINUE "TRACKING DOWN" ARTICLES
Once you've determined that the periodical is available in Tarleton libraries' collections by reading the item and catalog records, you have several options for obtaining the article in print and/or electronic format, as explained below.

  To obtain a printed version of the article, "An Empirical Analysis of Nominal and Interacting Groups" from the March 1975, volume 18 issue #1 of Academy of Management Journal, you have these options:
•  If you attend classes on the Stephenville campus, submit a request to the Periodicals Department at Dick Smith Library to have the March 1975 issue of Academy of Management Journal brought to the library from offsite storage.
•  If you attend classes on the Killeen campus, submit an interlibrary loan request (see Unit 9) to have the article sent to your library.
•  If you qualify for the libraries' distance learning services, you can request document delivery (home/office delivery of materials). Unit 9 offers more information about library services for distance learners.

  To obtain an online version of the article, you have these options:
•  Use the links in the periodical's catalog record to access JSTOR and/or Business Source Premier so you can locate the article online.
•  Use Internet search tools to locate the periodical's home page and see if archives are available.

  If the catalog has no records for the periodical or if the years of coverage do not include the year(s) needed, you have these options:
•  Use the SFX Journal Locator (discussed on the next page) to see if the periodical is available in Tarleton libraries' databases.
•  Use Internet search tools to locate the periodical's home page and see if archives are available.
•  If the SFX Journal Locator and the catalog have no records for the desired periodical, submit an interlibrary loan request (see Unit 9) to obtain the article from another library.

As mentioned above, Tarleton libraries offer the SFX Journal Locator, which is an online tool used to determine if a periodical offers full text articles in databases to which the libraries subscribe. The SFX Journal Locator is discussed on the next page.
