Unit
10 |
| WRAP-UP:
Researching Ethically |
In
this final unit of the library orientation, the emphasis has been
on maintaining academic integrity when conducting research. Topics
covered included
| |
copyright
and fair use, |
| |
plagiarism,
and |
| |
documenting
resources. |
The unit
provided links to copyright laws and guidelines, definitions and best
practices regarding plagiarism, and discussions about documentation
(why, when, and how).
The following reminders are offered as a means of summarizing this
unit's content:
| |
Adhere
to the guidelines of fair use to make sure that the
use of someone else's material is, indeed, fair. |
| |
Be
aware that copyright laws are in effect and cover all
types of works (writings, sculpture, music, and so on) no matter
the medium (audio, digital, electronic, print, visual, etc.). |
| |
Be
diligent while conducting research: take adequate notes,
keep a research log, and double-check the documentation. |
| |
Remember
that someone else's materials must be cited and documented (in
the body of your paper, as well as in a bibliography or works
cited list). |
| |
Understand
that plagiarism often occurs accidentally; however, the consequences
are severe -- no matter the cause. |
Congratulations
for completing the Tarleton libraries' orientation. Remember that
the material is available online to be consulted as needed. Using
the site index should help you quickly locate specific pieces of information
as you need them.
Good luck in your studies, and don't forget that librarians are available
to assist you -- in person, by phone, through email, and online.
