B.S. in Chemistry

Overview

The Bachelor of Science in Chemistry is a degree designed for students with a passion for testing theories and engaging in scientific practices. Students who enjoy working with their hands and exercising their minds will thrive on the challenges of the creative science that this degree presents. The demand for chemists is high and will continue to grow as society moves further toward a highly developed technological age that depends on the scientific materials that are available. Our Chemistry program offers concentrations in the following areas:

Student Employment

Student Employment

Students in our program who maintain a solid GPA and show dedication toward their studies are offered positions as lab assistants. Many of our students also work in our Science Clinic as tutors. Much like lab assistantships, students must meet a certain GPA requirement to be accepted as a tutor.

Program Objectives

  • Students will work with highly sophisticated instruments, computers, basic lab ware, and chemicals
  • Students will gain the knowledge to continue into graduate studies, as well as the skills to pursue careers in the scientific field

Tarleton Chemical Society

The purpose of the Tarleton Student Affiliate Chapter of the American Chemical Society is to allow students who have an interest in chemistry to meet and interact with like-minded individuals. The chapter helps chemistry majors make valuable connections in the professional chemical industry. Student members can get on campus jobs, such as: 

  • Laboratory Assistants
  • Chemical Stock Room Attendants
  • Tutors
  • Paid Research Assistants to Chemistry faculty members
Planetarium

Planetarium

The Tarleton Planetarium is an integral part of our Science Building, which opened in April 2001. Featuring a Digistar II digital starfield projector, 18 photographic slide projectors, two video projectors, and surround sound under a 40' (12.192m) dome, our 56-seat theatre is truly a fitting environment in which to explore the wonders of the universe.

Research

The Department of Chemistry, Geoscience, and Physics is fortunate to be the recipient of a Chemistry Departmental Research Grant from The Robert A. Welch Foundation of Houston, Texas. A portion of these funds is used to provide undergraduate students with stipends to assist in research endeavors. Five faculty members are currently involved in basic chemical research projects sponsored by this grant:
