Scheduled when the student is ready to begin the thorough and scholarly investigation of a topic acceptable to the dissertation committee. To be acceptable, the dissertation must give evidence that the candidate has pursued a program of research, the results of which reveal superior academic competence and a significant contribution to the field. Graded on a satisfactory (S) or unsatisfactory (U) basis.

Doctoral Standing and successful completion of the doctoral qualifying examination.
