Credit Hour
The unit of measurement some institutions give for fulfilling course requirements. A credit typically represents one hour of class per week for one semester.
With reference to financial aid, the opportunity for students to earn money to help pay for their education. Federal Work-Study is one program by which needy students can work to defray their educational expenses.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
The financial aid application document completed by the student, and the student's parents if applicable, that collects household and financial information. The FAFSA is the foundation document for all federal need analysis computations and database matches performed for a student.
Full-time Student
A undergraduate student who is enrolled in 4 classes (or 12 credit hours) or more during a Fall/Spring semester, 7 credit hours during a 10-week session, 6 credit hours during an 8-week session, or 4 credit hours during a 5-week session. A graduate student who is enrolled in 3 classes (or 9 credit hours) or more during a Fall/Spring semester, 6 credit hours during a 10-week session, 5 credit hours during an 8-week session, or 3 credit hours during a 5-week session.
Part-time Student
A student with one (1) or more hours less than a full-time student.
A form of financial assistance that does not require repayment or employment and is usually made to students who demonstrate or show potential for distinction, usually in academic performance.
An academic term of study of 16 weeks. There are also two 8-week sessions during Fall and Spring semesters as well as one 10-week and two 5-week summer sessions.
Short-term Loans
Short-term loan funds at Tarleton State University were established to provide assistance to students who experience temporary financial difficulty in connection with educationally related expenses.  These loans must be repaid with interest and/or service charge within a prescribed repayment period.  It is not the intent of this program to supplement or replace and regular long-term aid or assistance offered by the Student Financial Aid Office.  Short-term loans are available while school is in session and applicants must meet the requirements to be considered.
Student Grant
A type of financial aid that does not have to be repaid; usually awarded on the basis of need, possibly combined with some skills or characteristics the student possesses.
Student Loan
An advance of funds evidenced by a promissory note and requiring the recipient to repay the specified amount(s) under prescribed conditions
Texan Tuition Guarantee
Texan Tuition Guarantee is a new program which will cover tuition and fees for qualified freshman enrolling at Tarleton State University for the Fall 2010 semester.
