El Halcón (The Hawk)

John P. Kribbs

The Hawk

At midday it’s hot. The clouds of summer pass slowly through the blue sky. A red tail hawk is hunting. The bird flies slowly overhead. Meanwhile a mockingbird guards her nest in an oak at the edge of the pasture. The mockingbird fixes her angry eyes upon the menacing hawk that is approaching her nest.
The eyes of the hawk see everything below. The blades of grass are gently touched be a light breeze that passes over the plain. In an instant the eyes see the trembling ears of a very young rabbit attempting to hide in the weeds. This animal is dead. The hawk dips his wing to turn toward the unfortunate one. He flaps his wings powerfully in order to pick up speed. The hunter descends rapidly to his prey. The rabbit still remains in place, and he does not flee from the eminent danger until it’s too late. The rabbit jumps outside the weeds, but the hawk hooks him with talons on the back.
A cloud of dust rises toward the sky behind a white truck passing over the road. A rancher is returning to his home. He had just finished some business in the small town that is nearby. Ragweed, sunflowers, oak, mesquite, bois d’arc, and other trees cover both sides of the road. The rancher reduces his speed because he sees five buzzards in front of his pick-up eating a dead animal. He honks the horn in order to disperse the buzzards. The roads of modern civilization provide so much food for the vultures. The rancher honks his horn again. Finally they fly off in all directions with the noise made by the rancher. He continues his journey to the house. Suddenly he swerves the truck violently in order to avoid hitting a red tail hawk that evidently has caught a rabbit and is flying very low over the road. The hawk shows his entire wingspan to the startled rancher before passing over the truck.
“He could have broken the glass,” exclaims the rancher.
The wings of the hawk beat furiously in order to gain altitude above the earth; with his prey he flies over the field that had been plowed and left fallow. Higher he carries the rabbit in his claws. Then, the hawk releases his prey, and the rabbit falls to the ground. The fall lasts for a moment, but the rabbit gives a cry almost silent that only the animals are able to hear. Animals have senses that are finer than human senses. The buzzards turn their heads toward the cry. The vultures listen for a moment, and they begin to fly toward the lost one. The wounded rabbit tries to run from his fate, but the hawk throws himself upon him; he kills him quickly. With his beak he tears a piece of flesh from the throat and swallows; with his talons he holds the rabbit. The buzzards fly in a circle above the scene.
The rancher’s dog awakes from his dreams and begins to bark loudly from the porch. The rancher gathers the mail and the newspaper. The headlines of the newspaper say that the federal authorities have ordered the garbage dump to be closed for an indefinite period of time because there is no more capacity to hold waste. It will cost a lot of money to fix the situation. The rancher hears the dog and asks himself, “Why does that dog always bark?” He turns to close the door to the truck, and he realizes that someone has dumped a big pile of trash by the side of the road nearby. There are many useless things: a dirty mattress, an ugly couch, old magazines, broken toys, empty cans of motor oil, and empty bottles of beer. Apparently, someone needed a place to leave their trash. If the garbage dump is completely full and if the authorities in their wisdom close the landfill, then the town folk will find another site to leave their trash-like the side of the road. The disgusted rancher enters his house.
The eyes of the hawk look around. The buzzards begin to land nearby, and they begin to surround the hawk in a semicircle. One hears at a distance, the frantic barks of a dog as he jumps against the chain that detains him. The sparrows are frightened, and they hop up and down in the limbs of tree nearby. The buzzards take care not to cross the hawk. The eyes of the hawk stare at the eaters of carrion flesh as they remain perfectly still around him. Even though there are five buzzards, they never bother the hawk. The hawk could take an eye out with his beak when excited. The five buzzards wait until he fills his stomach. The hawk then flies to the top of an oak. He intends to stay in this tree until the next day. The buzzards are already fighting among themselves for the rest of the rabbit.

The presence of the hawk near her infuriates the mockingbird. She obstreperously attacks the hawk without warning with clamor and much fury. The hawk takes flight in order to escape the scolding, but the mockingbird attached itself to the neck of the hawk and begins to tear out feathers behind its head without mercy. The hawk leaves in humiliation, but his belly is full. The mockingbird returns to her nest never defeated by hawk nor crow because she has a will of iron. Also, the buzzards go back to the dead animal at the side of the road. The roads of man provide plenty of food for them.
