NIGHT CRY

Joyce Gray

Another night cry

Carried on capricious

    wings of wind---

The baby needs me again.

A touch on the forehead

And eyelids flutter and drift,

While the storm slams angry fists

Against windows blind and thick.

The cry pulls me out of sleep

    Time on time on time

Through tumultuous thunder

And relentless ragged rain.

My hand strokes away fever

And my power shuts out pain---

But when will night see day?

Moons have waxed and waned

When I hear the cry again.

But now the crumbled walls

Slow my wandering way

To the room of child and mother.

My tremulous hands betray

The truth of light of day---

My child has slipped away,

And the storms invade within.
