Tarleton’s fall Code Purple test a success
Tarleton State University’s fall Code Purple test delivered messages to more than 6,500 individuals.
The emergency notification system test was held Monday, October 10th.
Code Purple is designed to notify individuals of closing or delays due to weather, crime or other events that pose a threat to those on or coming to campus.
“Overall, the test of the Code Purple system was a success,” said Kent Styron, Tarleton’s Director of Risk Management and Safety. “With over 6,500 students, faculty and staff being notified there were only approximately 275 individuals who did not receive the message.”
According to Styron, there are several reasons for undeliverable messages, which include a user not updating their Code Purple subscriber information.
“A change in a cell number or cell phone provider could be the cause of an undeliverable message,” he said. “I would encourage everyone that didn’t receive a message and are signed up to verify their account information.”
Another problem that prevents a user from receiving a text message occurs when they reply to a previous Code Purple with the word “STOP.” This action deactivates their cell phone within their Code Purple account.
Finally, an individual may contact their cell phone provider and request that all SPAM be blocked. Unfortunately, this action may cause the cell phone provider to block a Code Purple message to their device. Students, Faculty and Staff should verify through their provider that short codes 795-16 and 703-59 be allowed to be sent to their device. These codes are used by e2Campus, Tarleton Emergency Notification System provider to send a Code Purple message.
There is no charge to those who subscribe to the system. It is voluntary and subscribers may opt-in or opt-out at any time. Accounts are active for two years before expiration.
“With the winter months approaching and the potential for closures, I would encourage anyone who is not a user to sign up for the Code Purple service,” Styron said.
