Animal Science Pre-Veterinary Emphasis

The Pre-Veterinary program is designed to prepare students for admission into the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University in College Station. Adjustments can be made to satisfy specific requirements for other veterinary schools if the student so desires. Because of the rigorous requirements and the intense competition for a limited number of openings in Professional Veterinary Programs, many of our Pre-Veterinary students will either complete at least 4 years of college preparatory work or choose among a variety of alternative career options. It is very important for the student to work closely with an advisor to maintain the most efficient course sequence.

In addition to Veterinary Medicine, there are a number of related careers in the Animal Science field that are equally rewarding. Students completing the degree are well prepared for careers in the scientific and technical aspects of Animal Sciences as well as the Nutrition Industry, the Pharmaceutical Industry, the Food Quality and Product Development Industry, and with various Animal Management Organizations.

Students interested in pursuing a veterinary medicine career can complete all the necessary prerequisites at Tarleton for application to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program at Texas A&M University. Please see the specific courses required for application listed here. As stated on the Texas A&M DVM Program web page, a student preparing for admission to a DVM program should choose a major that leads to a suitable alternative career in case the student is not admitted or changes his or her mind. Tarleton students have two majors appropriate for preparing for a DVM program: Animal Science or Biology. We encourage you to visit with faculty in these departments and review the degree plans for these two degrees so that you select the best major for your individual interests.

The Animal Sciences Department also supports a Pre-Veterinary Club that functions as one of the student organizations in the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences. In addition to social activities, this club is a valuable resource to provide updates on information for Pre-Veterinary students in the areas of admissions policies, contacts for work experience, help with class information and identifying tutors for specific classes.
