***TEST/ASSIGNM= ENT RETURN POLICY***

All test, assignments, etc. will be returned ONLY one time.    If you are absent the = day that items are returned do not come ask me for them. They will be put into a box just i= nside my office for you to look through during my office hours. I will not take up class time or p= rep time to return items to you because you were not in class.

LATE MAKE UP WORK: There is no excuse for late work. Absolut= ely NO late/make up work will be accepted unless arrangements are made prior to due date with the instructor. Tes= ts can only be made up on makeup day. No early or late tests will be given for any reason. Adequate documentatio= n must be provided if necessary (A note from coach/sponsor, lawyer, doctor, obitua= ry, etc.).

ATTENDANCE: Attendance is required a= nd will be checked. It is your c= hoice whether or not to come to class, but keep in mind that some points will be accumulated during class time. Student is responsible for obtaining class notes/information from classmates for a missed class.

It is not uncommon= for students of abnormal psychology, like some medical students, to think that = they have, or someone they know has, the symptoms of disorders that are being studied. Resist the temptatio= n to lapse into hypochondria!!!! Diagnosing mental disorders is a methodical pro= cess that involves more that just the appearance of certain symptoms. However, if you think that you nee= d to seek professional help for a problem, by all means please do so. There are counselors available at = the Student Development Center<= /st1:PlaceType> (TSC # 212, 968-9044). You ca= n also seek guidance from a private counselor or psychologist.

Abnormal Psychology Projects

* Please choose a project and turn in a form = by Feb. 14. Failure to do so will result in a 10 points deduction from grade f= or each day late.

Project 1

You are to select and watch any movie that addresses a= ny topic or psychological disorder we cover in class or in the text. Write a p= aper that discusses the movie and its character(s) in the context of your chosen abnormal psychology topic or disorder. Assume that I have not seen the movie you have selected and provide enough information about the plot and relevant characters so that I can follow your reasoning. Below this assignment is a = list of possible movies from which you may select. You are welcome to choose any movie you want, but I encourage you to consult with me before selecting a f= ilm not on the list, to make certain that it is suitable for this assignment

In order to receive full cre= dit for this assignment, your paper must include several things:<= /span>

Provide a DSM-IV diagnosis (if you can, = and state why if you cannot do this). Make sure to give your rationale for= the diagnosis including the symptoms that meet the diagnostic criteria of = the disorder.

Discuss any relevant part of the movie f= rom the standpoint of abnormal psychology. For example, how did the other characters in the movie treat the person with the disorder? How were mental health professionals portrayed in the= film? Did having the psychological disorder affect the character’s lif= e? If so, how?

Review the movie for its accuracy in portraying the disorder.

Papers should be no less than 4 pages, double-spaced a= nd with reasonable font size and margins. Remember to proofread as well as spell-check. No handwritten papers will be accepted

This project will be April 4. .Late pa= pers will lose 10 points for each day they are late.Your project is to be an original production. Do not take material directly (word for word) from a source and present it as your own, as this is plagiarism. = If you use books or other sources in this project, make sure you cite them in = the text of your paper, and provide a reference list, in APA styl= e, at the end of your paper. Make sure to proofread and sp= ell check your paper before submitting it. Points will be deducted for failure to follow these guidelines, for failure to proofread and spell chec= k, and for misspelling, typographical, and grammatical errors.

Project 2

You will research, write and make a 15 minute presenta= tion to the class. You need to select a psychological disorder. I recommend that= you choose a disorder as soon as possible, because only one person can present = on each disorder. I also suggest that you choose a disorder that we don’t hear about as often or that you don’t know much about. Common ones are depression, schizophrenia, phobias, PTSD, etc. Try to stay away from these. You must have a disorder approv= ed by Feb 14. The disorders need to be approved by me, and will be assigned o= n a first-come basis. Presentations will be held during class time on a day t= hat you choose. A list of your references, in APA form= at, and an information sheet for each member of the class is due at the time of your presentation.

What to include in presentation:

DSM-IV diagnostic criteria of the disord= er and examples of symptoms. You must do more than simply list the symptoms. Examples of symptoms, course of the disorder and prevalence information must be presented.

An overview of the most widely accepted current theory of the cause of the disorder

Current treatments for the disorder, inc= luding medication and therapy

Use of handouts, visual aids (such as overheads and videotapes), role-plays, etc, will enhance your presenta= tion

Due date for project 2:=

* You= must have a disorder approved and a form turned in by Feb14.

*     I am not picky a= bout this. I will let you choose t= he date the you would prefer. We can have about 2 per day and st= ill have regular class time. You = may pick a date anytime between March 21 and April 20. Again I suggest you pick a date and topic ASAP. Once you have cho= sen a date you can change as long as it is done in a timely manner.
