Peer Tutor Job Qualifications & Description

How to Become a Peer Tutor for Academic Support Programs

Tutors for Academic Support Programs (ASP) are students who excel academically, have good people skills, and are motivated by a desire to help other TSU students. The ASP hires tutors in Spanish, TSI Reading, and TSI Mathematics.

The minimum requirements for becoming a tutor are:

  • Current enrollment as an TSUstudent
  • A’s or B’s in the courses you’ll tutor
  • An overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Availability to participate in training sessions
  • Must be able to devote an entire semester to being employed as a tutor

If you meet the requirements above, we encourage you to apply for a job as an ASP tutor.

Texas Success Initiative Reading Tutor

  • Provide students with reading strategies that will help them be successful in classes that have a high concentrated level of reading.
  • Provide students with study skill strategies that will help them study more efficiently in courses with a high concentrated level of reading.
  • Motivate student to succeed in their endeavors to master the class with a C or better.

Texas Success Initiative Mathematics Tutor

  • Provide students with strategies that will help them be successful in Math 100 or Math 101.
  • Provide students with study skill strategies that will help them study more efficiently in Math 100 or Math 101.
  • Motivate student to succeed in their endeavors to master the class with a C or better.

Spanish Tutor

  • Provide students with strategies that will help them be successful in freshman or sophomore Spanish classes.
  • Provide students with study skill strategies that will help them study more efficiently in freshman or sophomore Spanish courses.
