Mission/Purpose

The Department of Student Publications at Tarleton State University offers an experimental education for students who wish to learn journalistic writing, reporting and photographic practices and technical methods used to design and reproduce publications, while providing a vehicle for the free exchange of information, ideas and opinions concerning university people and events.

Gain Experience

The Office of Student Publications is comprised of The J-TAC online newspaper and the Grassburr yearbook. Both of these publications are created and produced by students of Tarleton State University. The staffs of the publications consist of both paid positions and contributors, all of whom gain invaluable real-world experience.

  • The Office of Student Publications offers you the opportunity to:
    • enhance writing and communication skills
    • develop interpersonal skills
    • learn computer design skills
    • interact with offices and departments across campus
    • become aware of what is going on in your college community
  • This department also provides you with the opportunity to:
    • attend workshops and visit other college journalists
    • learn how to produce a newspaper or yearbook
    • produce newsletters
    • design web pages
    • create your resume
    • take photographs
    • work on University committees, etc.

In this evolving technological society, contact between people often begins with an email message. People only know you by what and how you write. Student Publications is a learning laboratory in which students learn to communicate both verbally (through interviewing for stories, discussing current events in the newsroom, debating editorial topics) and through written means (news stories, web design, memos to potential sources.)
