History of the Barry B. Thompson Student Center
The Barry B. Thompson Student Center building was erected in 1994 and was named after Dr. Barry B. Thompson. Dr. Barry B. Thompson served as the thirteenth President of Tarleton State University from 1982 to 1990. During his presidency, he inspired many students to complete their college studies, pursue a career and serve society through leadership.
For forty-five years, Dr. Thompson provided vision and leadership to Tarleton as a student, alumnus, faculty member and president. In June 2001, he was named President Emeritus of Tarleton by The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents.
Dr. Thompson was appointed Chancellor of The A&M System in 1994; a position he held until his retirement in 1999. The A&M System Board of Regents granted him the title of Chancellor Emeritus in 1999. Dr. Thompson is still an active member of the Tarleton community, serving on various committees. He is currently a member of the Tarleton Foundation. It is not uncommon to see Dr. Thompson around campus attending various meetings and visiting with everyone he comes across. Dr. Thompson is still a well respected member of the Tarleton family and has yet to forget a persons name once he meets them!
An avid rancher his entire life, Dr. Thompson has raised cattle and horses throughout this lifetime. He currently lives in West, Texas with his wife where they raise, train, and race Quarter Horses.
