Graduate Degree Comprehensive Exam
- Essay & Objective (all majors except experimental
psychology)
• Every candidate for an M.Ed., M.S., or SSP degree must apply for and pass a comprehensive
examination.
• The examination is taken in the final semester of graduate
coursework listed on the student's degree plan,
including all internship and practicum
courses.
• While the scheduled date is usually posted early in the
semester, the student is ultimately responsible for
contacting the program office for information
regarding the examination and for making arrangements to
take it as scheduled.
Graduating Semester Comprehensive Examination Dates and
Application Deadlines
• Fall -- Exam on 2nd
Saturday in November -- October 1st application deadline
• Spring -- Exam 2nd
Saturday in April -- March 1st application deadline
• Summer Sessions I
& II -- Exam on 2nd Saturday in July -- June 1st application
deadline

Graduate Degree Comprehensive Examination
- Thesis (experimental psychology majors)
An original research project will be proposed, conducted,
and defended by
the student in the form of a written thesis. The thesis
will be done under the
direction of a graduate faculty member as chair and two
other faculty
members as the student’s advisory committee. Refer
to the Graduate
School’s Thesis Manual and the Department Master's Commmittee and Thesis Guidelines for details regarding the preparation
and submission
of a thesis for approval (follow link here). Upon completion of the thesis, a final oral examination is scheduled with the
student’s advisory committee. Major emphasis will be directed toward defense
of the thesis, although the examination may also include related course work
materials.

150 clock hours for PSY 505 and 150 clock hours for PSY 584
- Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist students (M.S.
- Counseling Psychology)
150 clock hours for PSY 505, 150 clock hours for PY 584, and
200 clock hours for PSY 587
- Licensed Specialist in School Psychology students (S.S.P.
- School Psychology)
150 clock hours for PSY 505, 600 clock hours for PSY 595,
and 600 clock hours for PSY 596
- Licensed Psychological Associate students (M.S. - Educational
Psychology)
150 clock hours for PSY 505 and 150 clock hours for
PSY 584 (note: 450 clock hours under the supervision of
a Licensed Psychologist are required for licensure, so students
are encouraged to obtain more than the minimum required
hours in their practicums or to take PSY 587 - Practicum
III as an elective)
