Outlines for Physical Geology lectures

Note to students

The outlines provided below are intended to assist you in taking notes in class.  They do not represent a complete set of class notes, only an outline of major topics to be discussed.  If you rely on these alone for study purposes, you will find that you will be unprepared for the tests.

Study Tips

Come to class.

Take thorough notes in class.  (Writing helps in retention of information.  And of course, if it's in your notes you can go back and study it later!)

Use the outlines above to guide you while you take notes in class.

Retype/rewrite your notes after class, preferably in color.  (The use of color has been linked to retention of information when studying.)

Take your own notes from the book.

Create a one-page summary of each chapter to guide you while you study.  (Choosing the important concepts from each chapter will help you focus your study efforts.)

Visit the book's website for more than your homework assignments.  There they have chapter summaries, links to interesting and relevant websites, and other activities.

Check out the CD that came with your book.

Don't wait until the night or two before a test to study.  Study a little bit every day so the new terms and concepts become familiar and comfortable.

If you don't understand some concept or definition after you've studied it, ask for help!  Small Group Tutoring is now available-- USE IT!

Dr. Rinard has office hours as well-- use them!

If all else fails, there are also geology students available as private tutors for an hourly fee.

If you find you have a problem with test anxiety, note-taking, or study skills talk to the people at the Teaching and Learning Center.  They're there to help.
