Dick Smith Scholarships

These are available to students majoring in a department in the College of Arts and Sciences (the Social Science Department is part of this college). Incoming freshmen, transfer, or returning undergraduates may apply for this award. The amount of the scholarships is $1,200 per academic year for full-time undergraduate and graduate students.

To qualify, freshmen must have:

  1. graduated in the top 25 percent of their graduating class,
  2. a B+ average on all high school work
  3. a composite score of 1000 SAT or 22 ACT
  4. must complete 15 semester hours each semester

Early awards may be made to high school seniors who have:

  1. scored at least 1200 on the SAT or 27 on the ACT
  2. a high school overall average of 90 (A-) or better on any equivalent grading system, and
  3. completed the first semester of their senior year.

Returning and transfer undergraduates must have a 3.20 GPA on all college work attempted. Because scholarships are awarded before the end of the spring semester, applicants must have completed the fall semester the last long semester attended with a course load of 15 semester hours with at least a 3.20 GPA. If enrolled for the spring semester and awarded a scholarship for the following year, they must complete the spring semester with 15 hours and maintain at least a 3.20 GPA overall and current. Recipients must also be enrolled for 15 semester hours at the time the scholarship money is disbursed.

Those receiving scholarships for the fall semester may expect a scholarship renewal for the following spring semester, provided they have completed a 15-semester-hour course load and maintained at least a 3.20 GPA.

Junior college transfers from all Tarrant County Junior College campuses, all Dallas Community College District Junior Colleges, Cisco Junior College, Weatherford Junior College, Western Texas College, Hill Community College, Central Texas College, Temple Junior College, and McLennan Community College may be given early awards if they:

  1. have completed at least 40 semester hours of degree parallel work
  2. have at least a 3.80 GPA on all college work, and
  3. show evidence of being potential Arts and Sciences majors

Early awards may be made by the Dean of the College of Liberal and Fine Arts upon confirmation of the Scholarship Committee.

New graduate students must be accepted for enrollment in graduate study and have at least an undergraduate overall GPA of 3.20. Returning graduate students must have a 3.70 GPA on all graduate work. (A returning graduate student is defined as one who has completed at least 6 semester hours of graduate work).

Graduate students must be recommended by the department head of their major, and each department may recommend only one graduate student. A graduate student who receives a scholarship during the fall semester must complete the semester with the same number of hours as the scholarship was paid on with at least a GPA of 3.70 to receive the spring award.
