Tarleton State University exists to provide an academically challenging educational experience through effective teaching, scholarship, research, and service enabling students to pursue truth and acquire the understanding, knowledge and skills necessary for establishing successful careers and becoming responsible citizens and leaders.
Tarleton's culture is founded on acceptance, friendliness and courtesy. Students pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees, fulfill career education requirements and attend classes for personal enrichment. Almost 60% of Tarleton's slightly over 9,000 students are the first generation of their families to attend college. Tarleton's student population includes community college graduates, transfer students from other Texas colleges and universities, working adults, and military service members.
The primary purpose of Tarleton's teacher education program is to prepare highly qualified teachers to serve Texas and the nation. Tarleton State University is considered one of the top teacher-preparation institutions in Texas. Tarleton's Teacher Education program emphasizes broad general education as a foundation for mastery of teaching skills and specialized knowledge of an academic subject. One in three Tarleton graduates receives some type of educator certification. Traditionally, 99% of Tarleton students pass the teacher certification examinations. Tarleton graduates now serving as teachers and administrators in Texas schools provide a resource network for giving pre-service teachers classroom experience, identifying job opportunities for beginning teachers, and supporting each other as practicing teachers. The College of Education's sponsorship of the Effective Schools Projects ensures mutually-beneficial relationships with rural North Central Texas school districts.
Founded in 1899, Tarleton is a member of The Texas A&M University System. The main university campus is in Stephenville, about 65 miles southwest of Fort Worth. Tarleton also offers programs at campuses including Fort Worth, Killeen, and Waco.
