We have programs that will take you almost anywhere in the world, any semester. We can probably think of more, but here are at least ten good reasons why you should plan to study abroad sometime during your academic career:

  1. Study abroad broadens your horizons. See the world and find out that it's a very big place. Face new challenges and experience the thrill of being out of your immediate comfort zone. If you don't do it now, you may never have another chance.

  2. Study abroad is the best way to learn a language. Immersion is the most effective way to learn a language. You're surrounded by native speakers on a daily basis. It's not long before you're learning by osmosis.

  3. Study abroad provides you with lots of travel opportunities. With longer programs, you'll have a chance to travel on weekends. You can venture out to explore exotic places - some of then only a train or bus ride away.

  4. Study abroad helps you to learn who you really are. You'll return home with a new perspective, and sometimes a new appreciation of your friends and family. How do you know home is so great if you've never seen how anyone else lives?

  5. Study abroad expands your worldview. You'll be well acquainted with a culture other than your own. In a relatively short amount of time, you can be an expert in a variety of exotic and thought-provoking topics. No one will ever think of you as boring again.

  6. Study abroad is more exciting than studying here. Ok, does this really need explanation? You can be reading that history book in room 104, or you can be visiting the Cabinet War Rooms in central London. You choose.

  7. Study abroad will enhance your opportunities for employment. Corporations, educational institutions, and federal agencies are looking for professionals with international knowledge and foreign language skills. Your resume must compete in a market that's all about globalization. Be sure your resume doesn't land at the bottom of the stack.

  8. Study abroad gives you the chance to make friends around the world. You'll meet the locals, of course, but you'll also meet other international students. You'll be able to name drop in a variety of languages.

  9. Study abroad will help you develop talents you never knew you had. Whenever you're put to the challenge, you will find new strengths and abilities. Whether it's map reading, menu deciphering, or negotiating train schedules, you'll learn things that you would never be able to learn at home.

  10. Study abroad will make you an ambassador to create goodwill for the United States. If a peaceful global society is ever possible, we have to become globally literate citizens and do our part to share who we are with the rest of the world.
