MONKEY BAY WILDLIFE SANCTUARY, BELIZE

The Belize Program will resume Summer 2009.

Please contact Dr. Carol Key for information about this future oppportunity.

This experience is designed to introduce students to contemporary issues of Belize in particular and Central America in general and will cover environmental preservation and education. Topics include tourism as a form of development, agriculture for export such as plantation agriculture, the social basis of environmental problems and ethnic/cultural conflict and negotiation.

Belize is one of the last countries in this hemisphere to gain its independence in 1981. Vestiges of the colonial experience still abound, however, major issues in regard to development are being confronted such as the environment, ethnic and cultural homogenization, health care, and education. This field experience will enhance students' cultural and global understanding, but most importantly it will build bridges for peacful cultural exchanges in the future.
