International Social Welfare:

Policies and Practice in Germany

Students will have opportunities to visit a wide variety of German social welfare agencies including a Kindergarten for special needs children, residential treatment facilities, hospitals, agencies dealing with refugees and imigrants, and many more.  Besides agency visits, students will also visit museums, the birth palces of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, and take a Rhine River Cruise.  This course is truly an educational experience of a lifetime!

This course is designed to provide the student with an understanding of social welfare policies and programs from an international perspective. The implications of globalization and their impact on social welfare policies and social work practice will be examined. Strategies for inter-cultural social work practiceand methods of combating discrimination will also be examined. Students will travel outside the U.S. in order to become familiar with social welfare policies and programs from and international perspective. Teaching Method: The primary teaching approaches in this course will be collaborative and active learning. Material will be presented through lectures, class discussions, readings, videos, written assignments, and field trips.

The course will take place in Bonn, Germany.  Students will have the opportunity to visit German social welfare agencies, hospitals, and child welfare agencies, as well as, hear from guests speakers from Federal, State, and Local social welfare agencies as well as a representative from the EU .  We will also have the opportunity to visit Berlin and other historical cites in Germany.
