Tarleton State University has numerous scholarships and other formsof financial aid available for deserving students.

Frank A. and Gladys F. Chamberlin Scholarship

This scholarship is available to students meeting designated criteria. A trust established by the Chamberlins provides that the entire net income be used for scholarships or other financial aid for needy high school graduates of Erath County, Texas, and/or college students attending Tarleton who are residents of Erath County. Awards are made shortly after June 15 in amounts of $1,000 to $2,500 per school year.

Applicants must:
1. be recommended by an Erath County senior high school principal or by a Tarleton dean,
2. file with the Tarleton Financial Aid Office a Financial Aid Form (FAF) before April 15.


Dick Smith Scholarships

These are available to students majoring in a department in the College of Arts and Sciences (the Social Science Department is part of this college). Incoming freshmen, transfer, or returning undergraduates may apply for this award. The amount of the scholarships is $1,200 per academic year for full-time undergraduate and graduate students.
 

To qualify, freshmen must have:
1. graduated in the top 25 percent of their graduating class,
2. a B+ average on all high school work
3. a composite score of 1000 SAT or 22 ACT
4. must complete 15 semester hours each semester

Early awards may be made to high school seniors who have:
1. scored at least 1200 on the SAT or 27 on the ACT
2. a high school overall average of 90 (A-) or better on any equivalent grading system, and
3. completed the first semester of their senior year.

Returning and transfer undergraduates must have a 3.20 GPA on all college work attempted. Because scholarships are awarded before the end of the spring semester, applicants must have completed the fall semesteror the last long semester attended with a course load of 15 semester hourswith at least a 3.20 GPA. If enrolled for the spring semester and awarded a scholarship for the following year, they must complete the spring semester with 15 hours and maintain at least a 3.20 GPA overall and current. Recipientsmust also be enrolled for 15 semester hours at the time the scholarship money is disbursed.

Those receiving scholarships for the fall semester may expect a scholarship renewal for the following spring semester, provided they have completed a 15-semester-hour course load and maintained at least a 3.20 GPA.

Junior college transfers from all Tarrant County Junior Collegecampuses, all Dallas Community College District Junior Colleges, Cisco Junior College, Weatherford Junior College, Western Texas College, Hill Community College, Central Texas College, Temple Junior College, and McLennan Community College may be given early awards if they:
1. have completed at least 40 semester hours of degree parallel work
2. have at least a 3.80 GPA on all college work, and
3. show evidence of being potential Arts and Sciences majors
Early awards may be made by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences upon confirmation of the Scholarship Committee.

New graduate students must be accepted for enrollment in graduate study and have at least an undergraduate overall GPA of 3.20. Returning graduate students must have a 3.70 GPA on all graduate work. (A returning graduate student is defined as one who has completed at least 6 semester hours of graduate work).

Graduate students must be recommended by the department head of their major, and each department may recommend only one graduate student. A graduate student who receives a scholarship during the fall semester must complete the semester with the same number of hours as the scholarship was paid on with at least a GPA of 3.70 to receive the spring award.

Presidential Honors Program Scholarships

The Presidential Honors Program offers exceptional opportunities for outstanding students. Presidential Honors Students are given priority insuch areas as preregistration and housing assignments. They also enroll in two interdisciplinary Honors Seminars, participate in the Honors DegreeProgram, have the opportunity to travel to professional meetings in their major field of study, and receive annual scholarships of $2,500.

Graduate Assistantship

The Department of Social Sciences currently offers two teaching assistantships per academic year to qualified graduate students in either History or Political Science. Each position pays approximately $14,000 per academic year. Dr. O.A. Grant Scholarship in Political Science/History

Endowed in honor of Tarleton's Professor Emeritus of Social Sciences, these $1000 scholarships are offered to qualified history and political science majors. The application deadline for the fall semester is March15. As many as ten academically outstanding students can receive this scholarship during an academic year.

A native of Breckenridge, Texas, Dr. Grant was a member of the Tarleton faculty from 1948 to 1987. He served as chairman of the Department of Social Sciences from 1967 to 1976; was named as an Outstanding Educator of America 1976; and was chosen as Tarleton's Distinguished Faculty recipient in1983.

To be eligible for this scholarship, incoming freshmen must have an overall high school average of at least a B and a minimum entrance score on the SAT of 1050 or an ACT score of 22. The candidates must enroll in at least 15 hours during the semester and be a declared history or political science major.

Returning students considered for this scholarship must have a 3.0 GPA,completed 15 semester hours during a long term, and be enrolled in 15 hours for the fall semester. They too must be a history or political science major.

Joe and Teresa L. Long Scholarship

To be eligible for this scholarship, incoming freshmen must rank within the top 25% of their graduating class, have a "B" GPA, and a minimum SAT score of 1100 or a minimum ACT score of 23.   To keep the scholarship, students must complete a minimum of 12 hours each semester and maintain a current and cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.  The amount of money awarded by this scholarship varies



Winnie McAnelly Fielder Memorial Endowed Scholarship

This scholarship was created to assist academically excellent history majors in earning their undergraduate degrees at Tarleton.

Candidates for this scholarship must be declared history majors and special preference will be given to graduates of Mineral Wells, Gustine, and Brady High Schools. Incoming freshmen must have a minimum SAT score of 1000 or ACT score of 22. They must be ranked in the top one-third of their high school graduating class and be enrolled in 15 hours of course work during the semester the scholarship is awarded.

Returning undergraduates must have a cumulative 3.0 GPA and be enrolled in at least 15 hours during the semester the scholarship is awarded.

Should an undergraduate student not be selected, the scholarship award is open to graduate students. To be considered, a graduate student must have a GPA of 3.50, be enrolled in at least 9 hours each semester, andbe a declared history major.

Evelyn Wisdom Endowed Scholarship Fund

This scholarship shall be awarded annually through the Department of Social Sciences to a person who meets the following selection criteria:

  1.  A full-time student, as defined in the Tarleton State University catalog applicable for the year of enrollment in which the student makes application for the scholarship.
  2. A history major
  3. One that has demonstrated a need for financial assistance in order to be able to pursue his or her collegiate studies
  4. One who has or maintains a 3.00 grade point average
  5. A repeat recipient of the Scholarship, who continues to meet the criteria listed above
  6. A U.S. citizen and state of Texas resident who is also a graduate of a Texas high school
