Dr. Javier Garza 


 

Dr. Garza with his son at the Centennial BBQ in March, 1999.Assistant Professor of Math and physics, Dr. Javier Garza, was selected as the 1998 recipient of the Dr. Barry B. Thompson Service Award.

A member of the Tarleton faculty since 1994, Garza serves as the faculty advisor to the Math Club and is the primary departmental contact for students who need degree or certification plans.

Under his supervision, the Tarleton Math Club has grown in size and participation hosting the Faculty-Student Challenge, sponsoring "Math Talks" and providing opportunities for students to attend national and state professional conferences. They are well on their way to establishing a $10,000 endowment fund for Math Club Scholarships.

This fall, Garza was instrumental in organizing the first Mathematics Awareness weekend which brought public school students from across Texas to campus, and in October, the Exxon Education Foundation awarded him a grant for the promotion of student activities related to mathematics.

Garza is the faculty advisor for the Tarleton Lutheran Student Fellowship and director of UIL Number Sense competition. He serves of the Career Services Advisory Board and the Student Services Fee Advisory Board.
